When did the crucifixion of our Savior actually occur? Was it on Passover or Good Friday? What does the Bible actually say? Are both days the same?
Passover was observed the evening before the crucifixion at a time called "The Last Supper" by most churches. That's a biblical fact. The Bible says that Christ died on the daylight part of that following day right before a Sabbath, but which Sabbath?
Luke 23:54 tells us, but was it the weekly Sabbath or a special Holyday Convocation Sabbath beginning the Feast of Unleavened Bread mentioned in Exodus 12:15-16?
What day did this special Sabbath fall on when Christ was crucified? Was it actually a Thursday and not a Saturday? Does the Bible confirm there were 2 Sabbaths that week? See the full Bible Study below for more details of Luke 23:54-56. If you realize there were 2 different Sabbaths that week, then this is all more easily understood.
Does the New Testament teach anything about the timing of the crucifixion?
Most Christians celebrate Good Friday as the time the Lamb of God was killed on the cross. It's a Friday every year no matter when Passover occurs. Then Easter is celebrated 36 hours later, not 72 hours as Jesus said in Matthew 12:20. How is this possible? The math doesn't work. See the full study below for the answer.
Some Christians for 2,000 years have observed the death of our Savior correctly every year. We find them small and scattered throughout history but always faithful to the Bible teaching. They recognize that God commanded Christians to remember the death of His Son at a specific time.
So how does a Christian observance look different then the Old Testament Jews observance? How was it changed for us? You will have to read the full study for this answer.
Are there actual commands from Christ to observe a memorial of His death every year? Is there really a Passover Good Friday connection in Leviticus 23:5 and Exodus 12:3-14? What month and day was the lamb killed and what day was Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, then killed?
Does this really have meaning for a true Christian? Your opinion of when to observe the crucifixion doesn't matter. If you love your Savior you will remember His sacrifice on the right day and in the right way, and not some randomly chosen day.
